SS-2 | Pisco – San Juan de Marcona | Date: 08.01.2019 | (GMT-5)
Special stage: 342 km | Total distance: 553 km | Liaison: 211 km
The first long special stage and the first sizeable dunes – the stage from Pisco to San Juan de Marcona changed the standings, and there was a change of the leader in the off-road category. The new achiever is Sebastien Loeb, driving the Peugeot, who is eight seconds ahead of Juan (Nani) Roma in his Mini.
G-Energy Team shows the stability and teamwork of the crew – the 10thposition by the results of the special stage and two days.
Vladimir Vasilyev, driver, Toyota Hilux No. 311, G-Energy Team,“The special stages were not difficult – there were dunes, graders, and the river beds. It was fast enough, with a lot of straights. Dunes were both large and small. Nasser (Al-Attiyah) fell in the overall standings pretty much, because after yesterday’s victory he had to open the track; and given that navigation was not easy today, it was difficult. We started the fourth and overtook Jakub Przygonski, while he was changing a punched tyre. We drove in the third position, but Yazeed Al-Rajhi caught up with us and overtook, so we tailgated to the finish line. The weather is great today, it’s not so hot, around 25 degrees outside. We even don’t turn on the conditioner. Though it doesn’t take so much power, about five percent, as long as it’s possible, we drive without it. Toyota is going well, we don’t load it too much, we go carefully, albeit fast. We have no problems in the sand, the engine can withstand all the loads”.
Today is the day when the first severe tests for the riders have begun. The specialty of today’s stage was navigation without reference. Here the navigator had to focus and be extremely careful when reading the road book, constantly checking with the dash board and recalculating the course in his mind at each assault on the sand dune. He also evaluated and proposed the direction of travel that was not always convenient for the driver. The latter was looking for the safest and fastest way when forcing sandy hulks, and the co-driver had to keep in mind all deviations from the course and rebuild the route, taking into account the movement in these difficult conditions. At such stages the key to success is the crew experience, mutual understanding, as well as sensing the car and the engine work.
Premium G-Energy motor oil helps the G-Energy Team to cope with the most severe Dakar 2019 tests. According to Konstantin Zhiltsov, the team co-driver, “the engine is the heart of the car, so the engine oil quality and its ability to withstand the load influence the power plant run, the car work and the results that can be shown using the vehicle at its maximum”.
Konstantin Zhiltsov, co-driver,“I’m very satisfied, we drove well. We passed the dunes successfully, although we slightly slowed down in the middle of the section, where there were fesh-fesh and horse-piste – without roads, without reference. We dropped down the pace there so as not to do something stupid. It was hard, I can’t imagine how it was for Nasser, since we left third and in some places it was just a disaster with navigation. Al-Attiyah and Baumel opened the special stage great! At the very end, Yazeed caught up with us, there was a kind of trap, where we went one way and he drove the other. We let him pass and drove the final 10 kilometers “tail to tail”.
So how to drive when it is impossible to fix and there is no tree, no buildings? Only tons of sand and sun in the sky. An experienced co-driver here is worth its weight in gold, because if you get lost, there is no way to go back and start navigating from the previous point. Therefore a frequent situation at such special stages – cars are stopped while co-drivers study the terrain and choose a direction, many are circling and looking for a point to ensure that they start moving in the right direction.
Only the second stage was completed, and there are first retirements among off-road vehicles: of the 98 crews that started, only 81 reached the finish line. Orlando Terranova refused to fight because of poor health – the situation was serious, the driver called the helicopter and was taken to the hospital in Ica because of severe back pain. Stephane Peterhansel got stuck in the sands, so he had to wait for his teammate Cyril Despres to get the car back on track.
Tomorrow, on 9 January, there is a special stage from San Juan De Marcona to Arequipa – 467 kilometers of liaisons and 331 kilometers of competitive distance.
